
Dr. Courtney is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery. As Division Chief of Adult Reconstruction at Rothman Orthopaedics, he leads one of the nation's highest-volume joint replacement programs, advancing innovative techniques in complex primary and revision arthroplasty.
A native of Norristown, Dr. Courtney grew up locally and attended La Salle College High School before earning his undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry from Washington and Lee University. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by specialized fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois—one of the premier programs for hip and knee arthroplasty.
Dr. Courtney's clinical expertise encompasses partial and total knee arthroplasty, outpatient joint replacement, complex primary and revision procedures of the hip and knee, management of periprosthetic fractures, and treatment of periprosthetic infections. Committed to personalized, patient-centered care, he combines cutting-edge surgical approaches with evidence-based practices to optimize outcomes and recovery.
In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Courtney is passionate about educating the next generation of surgeons and remains actively involved in advancing the field through leadership, teaching, and scholarly contributions. He is humbled to be selected as a member of both the prestigious Hip Society and the Knee Society. He serves as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and lectures nationally and internationally. A renowned researcher, he has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has received multiple awards, including recognitions from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), The Hip Society, and The Knee Society.
He is proud to serve patients from across the Greater Philadelphia area and beyond, helping them regain mobility and improve quality of life. Above all, he prides himself in treating his patients as if they are members of his own family.
