Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit / Posterior Capsular Contracture
Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit (GIRD) occurs as a result of a loss in the degree of shoulder internal rotation movement. This is determined by a measurement of a loss of 20° compared to the opposite shoulder.
Symptoms
-
Shoulder Stiffness
-
The feeling that a prolonged warm-up is needed
-
Loss of Velocity
-
Posterior Shoulder Pain

Rotator Cuff Tightness
-
Posterior Capsular Contracture
Diagnosis
-
Physician Exam
-
MRI
-
MR Arthrography
Prevention
It has been shown that stretching after a pitching session will help prevent symptoms of GIRD.
Treatment
Non-surgical:
-
Rest
-
Ice
-
A prolonged course of Physical Therapy is usually recommended before any surgical intervention. This would include stretching and strengthening to improve shoulder mechanics.
Surgical:
-
Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery
