Sever's Disease

Sever’s Disease is an injury where there is inflammation in the growth plate of the calcaneus (heel). This area is also an attachment site for the Achilles Tendon which is the tendon that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Repetitive stress to this area such as running and jumping can cause pain and inflammation.

 

Symptoms

  • Heel Pain

  • Tenderness on the heel

  • Mild swelling at the heel

 

Cause

  1. Repetitive Stress to the heel

  2. Occurs most often during growth spurts

 

Diagnosis

  1. Physical History

  2. Physician Exam

 

Treatment

Non-Operative Treatment

  • Rest; Limit exercise and activity

  • Over the counter meds, NSAIDS

  • Change in shoewear

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises

  • Walking boot

 

Risk Factors

  1. Young adolescents that are less active, especially if they wear flat shoes.

  2. Children and adolescents that participate in activities or sports that entail running and jumping.
