Last month Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Spine Surgeon Dr. Guy Lee travelled to the Dominican Republic as part of the Abington Global Health Mission. For the last eight years the mission sends a cross section of specialists such as OB/Gyns, Pediatricians and Orthopaedic Surgeons to impoverished nations for a week to provide free care to those who would otherwise not receive it. Over the course of the week Dr. Lee treated any spine related patients including trauma. He was in hospital two of the seven days performing surgery and spent the rest of his time seeing people in clinic, administering injections and teaching orthopedic and primary care physicians.
“These trips are just one small way to give back to those less fortunate than us,” said Dr. Lee. “We take a lot of the things we have in this country for granted, especially access to high-quality health care. I feel it is only right to pay it forward to those who need it most.”
