The Philadelphia Phillies recently honored and recognized longtime Team Physician, Dr. Michael Ciccotti. The Director of Sports Medicine at Rothman Orthopaedics is retiring from his role with the ball club after being part of the Phillies family for 30 years. For 25 of these years, Dr. Ciccotti served as the Head Team Physician and Medical Director. Dr. Ciccotti has also served as the Chairman of the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Committee and President of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Ciccotti has been a pillar of support for the team, ensuring the health and well-being of the players with unwavering commitment and expertise. As part of the on-field recognition held for Dr. Ciccotti by the Phillies, the team gifted him with a custom-framed glove that included accolades of the great players he cared for over the past 3 decades:
- 4 Hall of Famers
- 3 MVPs
- 1 Cy Young Winner
- 1 Rookie of the Year
- 2 Hank Aaron Award recipients
- 12 Silver Sluggers
- 16 Gold Glove winners
- 52 All-Stars
This represents the first time the Philadelphia Phillies have ever awarded this keepsake glove to a non-player.
“I have been incredibly honored and humbled to be able to participate in the medical care of the Philadelphia Phillies for the past 30 years. During that time, I have seen tremendous advances in the care of sports medicine injuries in the elite athlete, and I’ve been so proud to be part of the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Medical Team that has been at the forefront of developing those advancements,” said Dr. Michael Ciccotti. “These 30 years have been a truly outstanding experience for me and my entire family … and we thank the Phillies for allowing us to be part of the best organization in Major League Baseball.”
Rothman Orthopaedics has had the privilege of caring for elite level athletes longer than any other practice in the region, including the longest standing orthopedic relationship in Major League Baseball.
As Dr. Ciccotti transitions to a consultancy role with the Philadelphia Phillies, we proudly announce that Dr. Steven B. Cohen will step into the position of Medical Director for the Philadelphia Phillies. Dr. Cohen, a seasoned Sports Medicine physician with a wealth of experience in orthopedic care and the Philadelphia Phillies Head Team Physician since 2016, is poised to continue the legacy of excellence established by Dr. Ciccotti.
