
Marc I. Harwood, MD Selected by Major League Baseball as Medical Consultant for the Major and Minor League Baseball Umpires
Philadelphia, PA, May 26, 2022 —Marc I. Harwood, MD, sports medicine physician at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, has been appointed by Major League Baseball (MLB) as a Medical Consultant for the Major and Minor League Baseball umpires. In his role, Dr. Harwood will work closely with MLB and its Umpire medical personnel to promote the health, safety and wellness of over 300 umpires.
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to work alongside MLB to enhance umpires’ health and safety,” says Dr. Harwood. “Not a lot people understand the day-to-day physical demands placed upon MLB umpires as well as their quality of life away from the field. It is humbling to be able to provide world-class care to this group, and I look forward to being able to support them in various stages of their personal lives and careers.”

Dr. Harwood completed both his family medicine residency and his sports medicine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia PA. He has worked in various roles in the professional and amateur sports world, including team physician for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2005-2021. He currently serves as a team physician for the St. Joseph’s University NCAA Division 1 athletic program and is a sports medicine consultant for several local high schools. In addition, he cares for elite level dancers at the Rock School of Dance Education, University of the Arts, BalletX, and the Philadelphia Ballet.
Additionally, Dr. Harwood has had held high-level ranking positions in the field of sports medicine including serving as Chief of the Non-Operative Sports Medicine Service at Rothman Orthopaedics from 2010 through 2021; former president of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association; and is an active member of the Medical Advisory Committee for Major League Baseball. Dr. Harwood is also a consultant to Athletes and the Arts and has been an active member on the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science’s research committee.
