Dr. Lonner is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in the surgical treatment of knee arthritis and meniscus tears. For over twenty years he has been a leader in the fields of partial and total knee replacement surgery. In fact, worldwide he is amongst the highest volume providers of unicompartmental, patellofemoral, and total knee replacements. He was one of the first surgeons in the U.S. to use robotic methods for knee replacement surgery, having introduced robotic techniques to the greater Philadelphia region in 2008.
In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Lonner has an extensive research portfolio, including such topics as robotic surgery, partial and total knee replacement surgery, opioid sparing protocols, perioperative protocol optimization, healthcare economics, early discharge, and outpatient knee replacement surgery. He has published several internationally acclaimed textbooks on knee replacement surgery and robotics, as well as over 250 scientific papers, reviews and textbook chapters.
Dr. Lonner is also a dedicated educator, serving as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally and often hosts visiting surgeons who are interested in learning his surgical techniques. In addition, Dr. Lonner has been involved in the design and development of a number of partial, total and revision knee replacement implant systems, in addition to several robotic technologies used for knee replacement surgery today.
After graduating with honors from Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Lonner completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in NYC, where he received several honors for research, education and clinical care. He subsequently completed his fellowship as a Harvard Fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston prior to coming to Philadelphia. Before joining the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in 2011, he served as both the Director of Knee Replacement Surgery and Director of the Joint Replacement Fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital.
In his career, he has been humbled to be acknowledged both by his patients and peers for his commitment to providing outstanding surgical care and for his impactful research, as is evident in the awards and honors he has received. Dr. Lonner is proud to have been recognized as a “Top Doctor” in Philadelphia Magazine, Money Magazine and other regional publications and to be named by leading Orthopaedic Surgeons as one of the top 22 knee surgeons in the United States for his innovative work in total knee and partial knee replacement surgery, as well as for advancing the field of robotic knee replacement surgery.
Beyond his clinical practice and academic responsibilities, Dr. Lonner is actively involved in several professional societies. He has served as Past President of the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society and as a board member and committee member of the Knee Society and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
