Peter F. Sharkey, MD

Dr. Sharkey is a board certified and globally recognized leader in Orthopaedics and an expert in the field of hip and knee replacement surgery.  He is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Sharkey is the first surgeon from Philadelphia to be inducted into both the prestigious Hip and Knee Societies.  He is an honorary member of the Irish Orthopaedic Society and was recognized with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Visiting orthopaedic surgeons and implant engineers routinely observe Dr. Sharkey’s innovations in surgical techniques and patented implant and instrument designs.  His work has led to over 100 patents and he has designed several of the best performing hip and knee replacement systems.  Dr. Sharkey’s research has led to hundreds of publications that have significantly improved the practice of orthopaedic surgery for decades to come.

Dr. Sharkey is an avid “but mediocre” golfer, skier and proud father and grandfather.  His motto has always been, “When you make a decision about care, invent a medical device, or improve a product, the first question should always be; Is this good for my patients?”  His patients are an extension of his family.

The joint replacement surgeons at Rothman Orthopaedics collectively perform over 17,000 hip and knee procedures each year in both an inpatient and outpatient capacity. They continue to lead the way in advanced technologies and procedures, providing our patients with the safest, most effective methods to get you back to what you were.  Services offered include:
