Osteoporosis: What To Know

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that happens when your body loses bone, doesn’t make enough bone, or both. This causes your bones to become weak and can cause you to break a bone with only a minor injury, or possibly even from a sneeze. (National Osteoporosis Foundation)

Normal bone looks like a honeycomb. When you have osteoporosis the holes of the honeycomb become larger, making the bone weaker. Weaker bones increase your risk for a fracture.

You don’t feel your bones getting weak, so you may not find out you have osteoporosis until after you’ve broken a bone. One in two women and up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone because of osteoporosis. (National Osteoporosis Foundation)
