The acetabulum is the cup-shaped part of the pelvis that forms the “socket” of the ball-and-socket hip joint. An acetabular fracture occurs when this socket is broken. These types of fractures are much less common than most hip fractures, which typically affect the “ball” of the joint (the top of the femur).
Causes
- High Impact/Energy event, typically a motor vehicle accident
- Fall from standing or a height, usually seen in the older population with weaker bones
- Any injury where the head or the femur is forced against the acetabulum.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain
- Pain with movement
- Numbness, weakness, tingling from nerve damage
Diagnosis
- Physical Exam, your physician will check your pelvis and hips as well as check there is movement in the ankles and toes and any nerve damage
- X-rays
- CT Scan
Treatment Options
- Non-Surgical
- Crutches or a walker
- Knee Immobilizer or Abduction pillow to help maintain the joint
- Pain medication as well as blood thinners to help decrease blood clots
- Surgical
