Overview
In 1966, I had ankle surgery due to a sports injury. It lasted 50 years! As I began having difficulty walking, I decided to research what if anything could be done. I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to have an ankle fusion as I wanted to continue an active lifestyle including playing golf.
Ankle Replacement Surgery
The year before the surgery, it became increasingly difficult to walk and I was always in pain. I continued to research my options. Dr. Winters was scheduled to lecture on ankle replacement at our local library, but he unfortunately had to cancel due to an emergency. I called his office the next morning to make an appointment. After meeting with Dr. Winters, initially he indicated I would need two surgeries if I opted for replacement. However, at our next meeting he told me that he had conferred with his colleagues and could perform the ankle replacement during one surgery. I made the decision to move forward.
Preparing for Ankle Replacement Surgery
Be prepared to go home the next day! Since you will be non-weight bearing for six weeks, be sure you have the necessary tools for recovery—knee scooter, shower chair, etc. We realized rather quickly that our house was not very handicapped accessible. Of course, someone at home to assist in your recovery and to transport you to physical therapy is critical.
Recovering from Ankle Replacement Surgery
I played my first round of golf in Florida three months to the day of surgery. Daily, I rode the bike, swam, or walked. Recovery in the warm weather and seeing the sun every day was so energizing.
Why Rothman and Dr. Winters
I chose Dr. Winters/Rothman because of their reputation for excellence. After meeting Dr. Winters for the first time, I knew I was in good hands. The fact that he conferred with his colleagues to design the best solution for me was key. I just had my checkup with Dr. Winters and my ankle is as stable now as it was 5 years ago.
Recommend
I have recommended Dr. Winters and Rothman to several friends as well as friends of friends. I will continue to do so when others ask about my experience. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
