Diagnosing Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis refers to the inflammation and/or degeneration of the Achilles tendon, a fibrous band behind the ankle which connects the heel of the foot to the calf muscles. This important tendon helps you to push off of your ankle, especially when running and jumping.

Unfortunately, overuse injuries of the Achilles tendon are relatively common. Typical symptoms include inflammation, pain, and swelling. These symptoms will tend to get worse during physical activities, such as walking or running, and improve with rest and disuse.

In addition to evaluating these symptoms, doctors will also perform a physical exam of the affected area, checking for swelling as well as flexibility, alignment, and range of motion. In some cases, a further diagnostic Achilles pain tendonitis procedure is necessary, and an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI may be used.

Non-Operative Treatment
Once Achilles tendonitis is diagnosed, there are a number of non-operative treatment options which can be very effective.  These include:

Rest to relieve symptoms and allow healing to occur
Immobilization such as a walking boot, in more severe cases
Ice to reduce swelling and pain while stimulating blood flow
Anti-Inflammatory Medication to reduce swelling and pain
Physical Therapy to form a proper stretching and rehabilitation routine

Stretching is not only one of the most important approaches to treat Achilles tendonitis, but it is also an essential preventative practice.  Stretching prior to exercise will help to promote the ankle flexibility you need to avoid inflammation of the Achilles tendon.

Surgical Achilles Pain Tendonitis Procedure
In more severe cases, a surgical Achilles pain tendonitis procedure may be the best option. The goal of this operation would be to repair or reconstruct damaged portions of the tendon.
