August 7th, 2015

If you or someone you love have experienced a meniscus tear and you are looking for a doctor to perform meniscal tear surgeries near Delaware, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute is here to help.

Meniscal tears can manifest in different ways, such as the transverse, bucket handle, normal tear, longitudinal, flap and torn horn. Often, these tears occur during sports activities that may cause the knee to twist, causing a tear.

Meniscal tears are also known as cartilage tears. Those who are older may have weakened cartilage that can cause degenerative tears.

How To Identify a Meniscal Tear

Just because you can still walk, does not mean you did not tear your meniscus. When the initial tear occurs, you may hear a sudden pop coming from your knee. As days pass, you may find that it gets harder to walk on that knee, and it begins to cause you more and more pain.

Common symptoms of a meniscal tear include:

  • Catching or locking of your knee

  • The feeling that your knee may give way

  • Your knee is unable to complete a full range of motion

  • Stiffness and swelling

  • Pain

Treatment

Fortunately, you have the option of seeing one of our orthopaedic specialists here at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, as soon as your injury occurs. Once you are seen, your doctor will be able to identify the severity of the injury. Dependant upon the size, location and severity of the tear, your injury may be treated without surgery.

Here are some of the options regarding non-surgical and surgical treatment.

Non-surgical

Your doctor may give your the RICE protocol.

  • Rest. Avoid putting weight on your leg as much as possible. Crutches may be used if necessary.

  • Ice. Be sure to use cold packs on your injured knee, 20 minutes at a time - several times a day. Do not place ice directly on injured knee, be sure to use a barrier.

  • Compression. To prevent blood loss and swelling, use a compression bandage over your knee.

  • Elevation. Recline when you are resting, elevating your knee higher than your heart. This will help prevent swelling.

Your doctor may also prescribe you medication for inflammation, and pain, such as ibuprofen and aspirin.

Surgical

There are two procedures your orthopaedic surgeon can perform on your knee.

  • Meniscectomy. The damaged meniscal tissue is trimmed away.

  • Meniscus repair. Some tears can be repaired by suturing the torn pieces together. Recovery is crucial after this procedure has been performed to be sure that the meniscus has healed together.
