Sports Injury Doctors Know Tis the Season for Ski Related Injuries
December 5th, 2013
Winter weather is an exciting time for people that love to participate in winter sports. Whether you love to ski or snowboard, you should know the risks that you take when you participate in these sports. As sports injury doctors, we see patients that are suffering from various ski related injuries during the winter months. Fortunately, statistics are on your side, because the risk of injury is not as high as it might seem. Around 3 people out of every 1,000 get injured skiing or snowboarding. While the statistics are not that high, it is still important to understand your risks and to do your best to prevent spinal injuries or any of other type of damage to various parts of your body.
The Body Parts Affected
As you would probably guess, your knees, legs, wrists and shoulders are at the highest risk of injury. A person can injure their knee without ever falling. All it takes is one twist the wrong way, and you could find yourself suffering from a knee sprain, torn ACL or bruised meniscus. If you do fall, your body is at higher risk for injuries, such as broken legs, sprained ankles, broken wrists and dislocated shoulders.
Preventing Injury
It might seem impossible to prevent injuries, while skiing, but if you practice proper control, contain an athletic stance and keep your mind on the slopes, you will be able to minimize the number of injuries that you experience. Never try to do more than you are capable of, and always practice on the smallest hill or least dangerous area, before trying any new techniques.
