Highly-Regarded Specialists in Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Spine Surgery Join Forces with Top Orthopaedic Practice

Rothman Orthopaedic Institute , an internationally-recognized leader in orthopaedic care, is pleased to announce the arrival of two new physicians to Rothman Orthopaedics New York:

  • Dr. Michael Smith—a Neurosurgeon specializing in the care and surgical management of spine conditions; and
  • Dr. Grigoriy Arutyunyan—an Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon specializing in a broad spectrum of spine conditions, including spine tumors.

Dr. Smith will see patients at Rothman Orthopaedics locations in Manhattan, NY while Dr. Arutyunyan will see patients both in Manhattan, NY and Harrison, NY. They will both perform surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital and Lenox Health Greenwich Village Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Dr. Smith completed his neurosurgery training in the residency program at the University of Pennsylvania and his spine surgery fellowship at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, England. Dr. Smith specializes in the care and surgical management of spine conditions including degenerated discs and joints, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. He has extensive experience with tumors of the spinal column and spinal canal, in addition to complex spinal deformity problems, including adult scoliosis, kyphosis, flat-back syndrome, and dropped-head syndrome.

Dr. Arutyunyan completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in the Department of Orthopaedics in Rochester, Minnesota and went on to complete a spine fellowship at the University of California. In addition to spine surgery, he is trained in orthopaedic oncology and completed an orthopaedic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, New York. He specializes in many malignant and benign conditions that may affect the spine, including Osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewings sarcoma, metastatic breast/lung/kidney/thyroid cancer, and multiple myeloma.

Dr. Smith and Dr. Arutyunyan, along with other Rothman Orthopaedic specialists, will regularly collaborate with each other on surgical and non-surgical care, to ensure that the best treatment options are determined for each individual patient.
